Mei Ling Chau is the founder and owner of the Hiro Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar. Ms. Chau was born in Hong Kong, China and moved to the United States with her family as a kid to Jacksonville, North Carolina. Her father established a Chinese restaurant to support their large family where she would start to gain her experience in the restaurant business which would lead to her owning her own restaurant in the future.
After moving to Wilmington, North Carolina, she started the original Hiro Japanese Steak House at the Oleander shopping outlet located on College Road in the early nineties, being one of the earliest and longstanding Japanese restaurants in Wilmington. A decade later she moved the business to its own building located on Old Eastwood Road and added a sushi bar to expand their menu, creating the now current Hiro Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar.
Ms. Chau is an independent and hardworking individual, being an entrepreneur and a mother, both jobs which require a good amount of fairness, patience, stubbornness, passion, and understanding. Her drive to provide quality food and service but more importantly, her wish for her customers to enjoy themselves at Hiro has led her restaurant to be continually awarded the Best Japanese Restaurant in Wilmington over the years.
